California High School's Sam Bautista emerged as the main catalyst for a Condors team that featured their share of talented runners.
At the CIF State Championships, Bautista led the Condors' effort by finishing with a 16th-best time of 15:35. That mark paced an impressive showing for California, which captured second place by scoring 127 points and recording an overall team time of 1 hour, 18 minutes, 55 seconds. With that finish, the Condors qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals.
For his efforts, Bautista was named the Daily News boys cross country runner of the year.
Bautista was also the Condors' top performer at the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Finals, posting a 14:34 mark that lifted California to a fourth-place finish (161 points, 1:13:34) and a berth to the state meet.
The Condors started their CIF-SS journey on a good note by taking first place in their heat at the divisional preliminaries. Bautista posted a team-best time of 15:44 for the Condors, who scored 61 points and finished with a team time of 1:19:21.
Bautista also earned first-team All-Del Rio League honors by posting a second-best time of 15:09.51 at the league finals.

DiMarco guided the Condors to new heights this season as they qualified for both the CIF State Championships and the Nike Cross Nationals for the first time in school history. The Condors qualified for the nationals by capturing second place at the state meet. He also coached California to a Del Rio League crown and a first-place finish in its heat at the CIF-SS Division 1 preliminaries.
FIRST TEAM
KEVIN RAMIREZ, Santa Fe, Sr.: Ramirez qualified for the CIF State Championships as an individual by turning in a seventh-place finish at the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Finals, posting a time of 14 minutes, 15 seconds. Ramirez, who won the Del Rio League crown with a 15:07.54 mark, won his heat at the CIF-SS Division 1 preliminaries (15:29).
LEO CORCORAN, California, Sr.: Corcoran played a key role in the Condors' drive to the CIF State Championships and the Nike Cross Nationals. He helped punch the Condors' ticket to the nationals by finishing with a time of 15:37 at the state meet. Corcoran's performance lifted the Condors to a second-place team finish at the state championships.
JOSE PACHECO, California, Jr.: Pacheco was also a significant contributor to the Condors' success. At the CIF State Championships, Pacheco emerged with a 15:45 mark that was third best among California runners. He helped the Condors to a fourth-place finish at the CIF-SS Division 1 Finals, posting a 14:44 mark.
MATLAZOMATLI ROJAS, California, Jr.: Rojas made his presence felt among a talented Condors team. He helped California qualify for the CIF State Championships by turning in a 14:37 mark at the CIF-SS Division 1 Finals. Rojas' divisional finals time was second-best among Condor runners. He then ran for a 15:56 at the state meet.
GEOFRY SARCO-CLIMACO, El Rancho, Jr.: Sarco-Climaco helped the Dons reach the CIF-SS Division 1 Finals by contributing a time of 15:55 in lifting El Rancho to a fourth-place team finish at the preliminary meet. The first-team All-Del Rio League selection was the top Dons runner at the divisional finals, recording a mark of 14:45.
ERVY RODRIGUEZ, Santa Fe, Sr.: Rodriguez captured a CIF-SS Division 1 Finals berth as a individual by finishing with a fourth-best time of 15:44 in his heat at the divisional preliminaries. He also earned a first-team All-Del Rio League selection by taking seventh place at the league finals where he posted a mark of 15:29.92.
