Zuckerberg lifts Facebook's battered stock

NEW YORK (AP) ? CEO Mark Zuckerberg's talk of Facebook's mobile prospects and his acknowledgment that the company cares about making money as well as making the world "more open and connected" lifted the battered shares of the social networking icon on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Zuckerberg spoke at a tech conference in San Francisco in his first interview since Facebook's rocky initial public offering in May. The stock has lost roughly half its value since the IPO. On Wednesday it gained $1.50, or 7.7 percent, to close at $20.93, still 45 percent below its IPO price of $38.

"He explained past missteps and challenges related to mobile and provided reasons for related optimism," wrote S&P Capital IQ equity analyst Scott Kessler in a note to investors. "In addition, Zuckerberg expressed disappointment related to the IPO and stock price, but indicated (that Facebook) cares about its shareholders, and that the company has had its share of ups and downs over the years."

Some on Wall Street had been questioning Zuckerberg's ability to lead a large public company. But the 28-year-old seemed to reassure investors during his half-hour appearance, where he appeared at ease in front of an audience of Silicon Valley bloggers, journalists, developers and others. He also signaled that Facebook will likely intensify its rivalry with Google Inc. by getting into the search business.

As it is, Facebook already processes about 1 billion search requests a day, Zuckerberg said, "and we basically are not even trying."

A more robust search engine "would be one obvious, interesting thing for us to do in the future," he said during an interview with blogger-turned venture capitalist Michael Arrington. Arrington is the founder of technology blog TechCrunch, which put on the conference.

Jefferies analyst Brian Pitz said Facebook's plans to enter the search business at some point are a good thing. But he adds that he "won't get too excited" until there are more details.

"Facebook already has a team in place working on search, which is not surprising given the company sees so many daily queries," the analyst wrote. "But monetization will take time and we think the relatively narrow scope of Facebook's search limits overlap with (Google), for now."

Vermont Sports Hall of Fame announces inaugrual class

The Vermont Sports Hall of Fame will honor 13 of the finest Green Mountain State athletes and contributors when it inducts its inaugural class on November 17, 2012.

Dave Hakins, chair of the VtSHF board of trustees, unveiled the Class of ?12 Tuesday afternoon at Cairns Arena in South Burlington. The enterprise is in cooperation with Prevent Child Abuse Vermont, the VtSHF?s designated charity.

Members of the class represent 11 sports, several generations and most Vermont counties. Collectively, they have earned multiple Olympic medals, won several team sports World Championships and captured numerous individual and team accolades.

The Class of?12 includes (in alphabetical order):

Tony Adams, contributor (media): Tony was a trailblazer in bringing televised sports to Vermonters on WCAX-TV for 35 years. He was also the voice of University of Vermont and St. Michael?s College sports teams and was named the Vermont Sportscaster of the Year five times. He resides in Essex Junction.

Larry Benoit, outdoors: Larry is a legendary deer hunter. He has an unparalleled record for bagging large, mature bucks in the woods of northern Vermont and Maine. He was called ?The Best Deer Hunter in America? by Sports Afield in 1970. He resides in Duxbury.

Jen Carlson, soccer: Jen was a standout soccer player at Champlain Valley Union High School and the University of Connecticut. A two-time high school All-American, she was a three-time Big East first team selection. She finished her college career among the UConn leaders with 40 goals and 40 assists.

Jake Burton Carpenter, contributor (snowboard): While residing in Londonderry, Jake is the inventor of and an innovator in snowboarding. His vision led to the rapid spread of the sport nationally and internationally. He hand-built many of the first snowboards, took part in the first competitions and helped organize the first national championships at Suicide Six.

Ray Collins, baseball: The Colchester native was a standout at Burlington High School and the University of Vermont before he joined the Boston Red Sox. Ray pitched seven seasons with Boston with a record of 84-62 and a 2.51 ERA. He was in the rotation for the 1912 and 1915 World Series champions and started the first World Series game at Fenway Park.

Larry Gardner, baseball: Larry was a stellar player at Enosburg High School and the University of Vermont before signing professionally with the Boston Red Sox. He played 17 years with the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Athletics and Cleveland Indians, hitting a career .289. A superior defensive third baseman, Larry helped the Red Sox win three World Series titles and the Indians win one.

Albert Gutterson, track & field: Raised in Andover and Springfield, Albert stood out in several sports at Springfield High School. He continued his outstanding track career at the University of Vermont, winning several New England Ttitles and another in the prestigious Penn Relays. He then became Vermont?s only Olympic Gold medalist in track & field by winning the long jump at the 1912 Stockholm games.

Bill Koch, Nordic ski: Bill competed in four Olympics: 1976, 1980, 1984 and 1992. From Brattleboro, he is arguably America?s greatest Nordic skier. He was the first American to medal in Olympic cross-country skiing, earning the 30-K silver in the 1976 games. He was the flag-bearer the U.S. team at the 1992 Games and was the overall Nordic world champion in 1982.

Andrea Mead Lawrence, Alpine skiing: The three-time Olympian (1948, 1952, 1956) from Rutland was 15 years old at her first Games. She swept the U.S. nationals at age 17. In 1952, Andrea became the first American Alpine skier to medal in the Olympics, winning the gold in slalom and giant slalom, the only time an American won has two Alpine gold medals in the same Olympics. It was 20 years before another American woman earned any Alpine medal.

John LeClair, hockey: John had outstanding careers at BFA-St. Albans and the University of Vermont before making his mark on the National Hockey League. Scoring on his first shot in his debut for Montreal in 1991, he scored two overtime goals in the 1993 finals to help the Habs win the Stanley Cup. He moved to Philadelphia where he was a five-time all-star andwas the first American-born player to have three consectuve 50-goal seasons. He finished his career with 406 goals. He also helped lead the U.S. to the 1996 World Cup title and he won a silver medal at the 2002 Olympics.

Nicole Levesque Andres, basketball: A native of Shaftsbury, Nicole was a standout guard for Mount Anthony Union High School by scoring 1,938 points, including a then-state single-game record of 40 in 1990. She went on to Wake Forest where she became the school?s all-time assist leader and ranked third in scoring while twice earning All-ACC honors. She is the first and only Vermonter to play in the WNBA, playing for the Charlotte Sting in 1997.

Ken Squier, contributor (stock car racing; media): Ken, a native of Waterbury, has spent decades broadcasting high school sports in Vermont and he was a pioneer in the television broadcasting of NASCAR races. He built and still co-owns Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre. He is a five-time Vermont Sportscaster of the Year. The NASCAR Media Award bears his name.

Bob Yates, football: A native of Montpelier, Bob was an all-state player for Montpelier High School before a fine career as an offensive and defensive lineman at Syracuse University, where he also handled kicking duties. He helped the Orange win the 1959 national championship (11-0 and Cotton Bowl victory) and was a Sporting News All-American as a senior. He went on to play six seasons for the Boston (now New England) Patriots.

BEIJING (AP) ? Where is president-in-waiting Xi Jinping?

Is he nursing a bad back after pulling a muscle in a pick-up soccer game (or maybe in the swimming pool)? Has he been convalescing after narrowly escaping a revenge killing by supporters of ousted local Communist Party boss Bo Xilai? Was he in a car accident? Or is he just really busy getting ready to lead the world's No. 2 economy ahead of an expected leadership transition next month?

Chinese micro-bloggers and overseas websites have come up with all kinds of speculation as to why the current vice president has gone unseen for more than a week. During that span, Xi canceled meetings with visiting foreign dignitaries including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. On Monday, it was the Danish prime minister's turn.

Xi's whereabouts during this sudden absence from the spotlight may never be known. One thing, however, is certain: China may now be a linchpin of the global economy and a force in international diplomacy, but the lives of its leaders remain an utter mystery to its 1.3 billion people, its politics an unfathomable black hole.

So when the presumptive head of that opaque leadership disappears from public view, rumor mills naturally go into a frenzy.

"There is a longstanding practice of not reporting on illnesses or troubles within the elites," said Scott Kennedy, director of Indiana University's Research Center for Chinese Politics and Business in Beijing. "The sense is that giving out such information would only fuel further speculation."

Adding grist to the mill, a scheduled photo session with visiting Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, which the media were asked to cover, was taken off the program. Thorning-Schmidt is also due to meet with Vice Premier Wang Qishan on Monday and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday.

The Foreign Ministry claimed the Xi-Thorning-Schmidt meeting was never intended to take place.

"As I said last week, China's state councilors will meet the Danish prime minister," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said. When asked about the rumors of an injury, Hong said "we have told everybody everything," and refused to elaborate.

Most online speculation about the portly 59-year-old Xi has centered on a back problem, possibly incurred when he took a dip last week in the swimming pool inside the Zhongnanhai leadership compound. Another rumor has the back being hurt in a soccer game. It wasn't clear what the sources of the information were.

More dramatically, the U.S.-based website Boxun.com cited an unidentified source inside Zhongnanhai as saying Xi was injured in a staged traffic accident that was part of a revenge plot by Bo's supporters in the security forces. Another member of the all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee, He Guoqiang, was also injured in a similar incident, said the site, which acts as a clearinghouse for rumors and unsubstantiated reports. It has correctly predicted some recent political developments and been wildly off the mark on others.

As if to demonstrate the range and randomness of the speculation, Boxun later replaced the report with another saying Xi was merely preoccupied with preparations to take over as head of the ruling party.

This year, China has seen an unusual amount of political intrigue, with the spectacular downfall of Politburo member Bo exposing divisions within the leadership and prompting rumors of nefarious activity ranging from the wiretapping of top leaders to an attempted coup.

The sudden transfer of a key secretary to President Hu Jintao earlier this month also spawned conjecture about a Ferrari crash involving the aide's son and an ensuing attempted cover-up.

Rumors about Xi were churned further by Russian President Vladimir Putin's cryptic remark over the weekend that the start of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum leaders' meeting in Vladivostok had been delayed because Hu needed to attend to an important but unspecified domestic issue.

The tension and uncertainty are heightened by the timing ahead of a generational shift to a new leadership that is to be headed by Xi. Still, in keeping with the China government's proclivity for secrecy, the logistics of the transition remain unknown.

Xi is expected to first assume Hu's mantle as Communist leader at a party congress held once every five years. Yet the dates for the meeting, expected in the second half of October, have yet to be announced, prompting talk that at least some of the seats on the nine-member Standing Committee remain up for grabs.

Recent economic and diplomatic challenges have also added to the sense of insecurity.

While China avoided the worst of the global economic slowdown, export growth and domestic demand have both fallen sharply in recent months, prompting forecasters to slash their estimates for economic growth needed to create jobs and fill government coffers.

Meanwhile, Beijing has been deeply unnerved by Washington's new emphasis on military and political ties to China's neighbors in the western Pacific and finds itself enmeshed again in a nagging dispute with Japan over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

Wang Xiangwei, editor-in-chief of Hong Kong's South China Morning Post and a longtime state media insider, wrote Monday in his newspaper that Chinese leaders' meetings are planned well in advance and cancelations are extremely rare.

"Baring Xi himself offering a very unlikely explanation today about his canceled meetings last week, the outside world may never know the exact reason, and the rumors are unlikely to fade away," Wang wrote.

Though absent in person, Xi did pop up Monday on the front page of the party academy's official newspaper Study Times alongside a transcript of the speech he delivered nine days earlier.

In the text, he enjoins newly enrolled cadres to use their time on the leafy campus in the northern Beijing suburbs to think critically about major national issues and not spend it "expanding personal contacts and inviting guests to dinner."

Meteoroids Change Atmospheres of Earth, Mars, Venus

Meteoroids streaking through the atmospheres of planets such as Earth, Mars and Venus can change these worlds' air, in ways that researchers are just now beginning to understand.

Most planetary atmospheres are made up of simple, low-mass elements and compounds such as carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen. But when a debris particle, or meteoroid, passes through, it can shed heavier, more exotic elements such as magnesium, silicon and iron.

Such elements can have a significant impact on the circulation and dynamics of winds in the atmosphere, researchers say.

"That opens up a whole new network of chemical pathways not usually there," said Paul Withers of Boston University. [Infographic: Earth's Atmosphere Top to Bottom]

Contaminating the outer layers

Part of a planet's upper atmosphere, the ionosphere contains plasma ? a mixture of positively charged (ionized) atoms or molecules and the negatively charged electrons stripped from them. When simple elements such as oxygen move into this outer shell, they break apart easily, decaying in a matter of minutes.

But meteoroids streaking toward a planet's surface carry heavier metals that can be removed in a variety of ways. A grain of dust, for instance, may rapidly burn up, shedding already-ionized magnesium as it falls. Or, neutral magnesium may be torn from the small rock, then receive a charge from sunlight or from stripping an electron from another particle. The newly charged elements can take as much as a full day to decay.

Meteoroids that blaze a trail through the atmosphere are called meteors, or shooting stars. Only those that make it to the ground are meteorites.

"When we add metal ions to the ionosphere as a result of this meteoroid input, we create plasma in regions where there wasn't any plasma there to start out with," Withers told SPACE.com.

In a recent article for Eos, the American Geophysical Union's newspaper covering Earth and space sciences, Withers discusses important questions raised by the recent wealth of research on the upper atmosphere of Mars and Venus.

Shocking similarities, strange differences

Over the last decade, scientists have collected more and more information about the ionospheres of Mars and Venus. Though one might envision the composition and location of the two planets would create different interactions in the ionosphere, the two are actually very similar, scientists say. "If you stand at the surface of the two planets, they are very different," Withers said. "But up at about 100 kilometers (62 miles), conditions are surprisingly similar."

The pressures, temperatures, and chemistry at high altitudes are comparable for the two planets. So too are many of the properties of the layers of charged particles shed by meteoroids.

"The plasma densities are quite similar on average on all three planets, which is not what you might expect on the first impression," Withers said, referring to Earth, Mars and Venus.

Since the sun is the ultimate driving force for most ionization processes, it's tempting to assume that Venus has more particles in a given area than Mars does because it orbits twice as closely to our star. Instead, the two planets have similar densities, which differ from Earth's measurements by only a factor of ten.

At the same time, the layers affected by the meteoroids on Earth are very narrow, maybe only a mile or two wide, while Venus and Mars both have layers stretching six to eight miles.

According to Withers, the difference may come from the presence of Earth's strong magnetic field, a feature lacking on the other two planets. But scientists aren't certain how much of a role the field actually plays.

Finding the source

To study Earth's ionosphere, scientists can launch rockets to take measurements in the region. But the process is more complicated for other planets.

As a spacecraft travels through the solar system, a targeted radio signal sent back to Earth can be aimed through the ionosphere of a nearby planet. Plasma in the ionosphere causes small but detectable changes in the signal that allow scientists to learn about the upper atmosphere.

This process ? known as radio occultation ? doesn't require any fancy equipment, only the radio the craft already uses to communicate with scientists on Earth.

"It's really one of the workhorse planetary science instruments," Withers said.

Because it is so simple, the process has been applied to every planet ever visited by spacecraft.

Only in recent years has enough data come back on Venus and Mars to seriously examine their upper atmospheres. As of yet, no numerical simulations have been created to explain some of the differences, but Withers expressed hope that this would change in the near future. Such simulations could help answer some of the questions that the observations have raised.

Withers also hopes that, in time, a detailed understanding of the ionosphere could even help scientists engage in a kind of "atmospheric archeology" for Venus and Mars.

One day, scientists may be able to track the history of comets in the solar system by measuring how planetary atmospheres have been affected by the icy wanderers' shed dust and gas. But conclusions drawn by this sort of sleuthing are probably a ways down the road, Withers said.
